I recently read this article on Fistful of Talent, a recruiting/HR blog. In it, Seth Godin is quoted as saying,
“This is controversial, but here goes: I think if you’re remarkable, amazing or just plain spectacular, you probably shouldn’t have a resume at all.”,
what FoT doesn’t get into is that he instead recommends
“three extraordinary letters of recommendation from people the employer knows or respects”
…well of course he’s going to say that, according to his wikipedia entry, “in late 2005, Godin founded the “recommendation network” website Squidoo.” so it only behooves him to push getting recommendations over sending resumes.
I won’t argue that times, they are a changing, and eventually there will be a new standard of letting a company know you’re the one they need to hire, but we’re not there yet. I also believe the new media for social networking is a great advancement in traditional networking (especially considering how much people move around). But, I would caution using only the new media to land a gig, despite how spectacular you are.
